About TSBR
The Texas Society for Biomedical Research (TSBR) is a statewide, private non-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote research and education in the biomedical sciences.
The goals of the organization are to provide: educational programs and new initiatives designed to educate health care professionals, researchers, students, and the lay public on the benefits associated with the:
• Humane care and use of animals in biomedical research.
• Responsible and ethical involvement of human subjects in biomedical research.
• Safe and responsible use of pathogens and hazardous materials in biomedical research.
Provide information on “best practices” to Texas institutions of higher education and other research facilities related to the:
• Humane care and use of animals in biomedical research.
• Responsible and ethical involvement of human subjects in biomedical research.
• Safe and responsible use of pathogens and hazardous materials in biomedical research.
Texas’s leading academic institutions founded the TSBR in 1989 in response to intensifying animal rights activism. Currently, the Society’s 30+ institutional members and supporters include academia, industry, non-profit research, education and advocacy organizations, professional societies and philanthropic foundations.
The Society plays a leading role in bioscience education and advocacy at the state and national level by providing objective, timely and authoritative advice and information to educators, students, the news media and the general public. TSBR supports our research community by providing public outreach training and resources about the benefits of biomedical research humane care and use of animals in research and issues related to human research subjects protection.
The TSBR’s programs, developed in close partnership with our member institutions and our national partners include: teacher training workshops, educational publications and resources for students and the general public, symposia and exhibits at state and national conferences. We develop and conduct specialized conferences for our member institutions addressing current issues and trends.
TSBR is the states leader in promoting public understanding and support for biomedical research. The Society addresses public science literacy through its teacher training programs which has reached thousands of teachers from across the state. TSBR also participates in science-based forums where research experts can discuss issues surrounding biomedical sciences.
TSBR helps its members communicate the benefits of research to various audiences by providing outreach training, talking point’s, research advocacy tips, and in print/web based resources for student and general public audiences.
The Society monitors legislation/regulations that would affect biomedical research and science education. We keep our membership appraised of issues which require action on the local state and national level. We keep our legislators apprised of issues relevant to our mission through our publications, direct personal contact and letter writing campaigns.
TSBR provides crisis management support to deal with threats posed by animal rights activists and other extremist groups.
TSBR offers risk reduction assessment, crisis preparedness training, on-site crisis response, and public relations support. We work in concert with campus, local, state and federal law enforcement.
